McGill University welcomes qualified international applicants from all over the world!
All applicants, regardless of country of origin or backgrounds must meet these minimum academic requirements:
Have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country.
The university degree, described above, must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript.
Applicants must also meet any academic requirements set by the McGill graduate department to which they are applying. Admission to McGill is competitive and meeting the minimum standard does not guarantee acceptance.
As an international applicant you must additionally prove proficiency in English, and learn about International credentials and grade equivalencies, and be aware of the admission deadlines applicable to you.

English language proficiency
Since English is the primary language of instruction and communication at McGill, you must demonstrate an adequate level of proficiency in English, regardless of your citizenship status or country of origin.
McGill University has this language requirement to ensure that all students will have the opportunity for success in their chosen program. Below you will find information on when proof of proficiency is not required, required, and where exemptions may occur.

Proof of proficiency - not required
Normally, if you meet any one of the following conditions you are not required to submit proof of proficiency in English:
Mother tongue (language first learned and still used on a daily basis) is English
Has obtained (or is about to obtain) an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction
Has obtained (or is about to obtain) an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized institution in Canada or the United States of America (anglophone or francophone)
Has lived and attended university, or been employed, for at least four consecutive years, in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language.

If you do not meet any of the above-listed conditions, you must demonstrate proficiency in English using one of the following options:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum acceptable scores are:
The CBT is no longer being offered. CBT results will no longer be accepted as ETS no longer reports these results.
N.B. an institutional version of the TOEFL is not acceptable.
IBT (Internet-Based Test): 86 overall, no less than 20 in each of the four component scores
PBT (Paper-Based Test): 567
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): a band score of 6.5 or greater (Academic module)

Our Tradition of Welcoming International Students
Many of McGill’s graduate students have completed prior studies outside of Canada. Accordingly, our admission specialists are well versed in interpreting international credentials and grades. All graduate program applicants, whatever their background, must have completed at least one undergraduate degree from a recognized university, with a grade point average of at least 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent.

Application deadlines
Please consult the program page to determine the Application deadline for the program you are applying to. These dates vary between departments and programs.
Admission to graduate studies at McGill operates on a rolling basis. Completed applications and supporting documentation must reach departmental offices on or before the specified Application deadline.
Make sure your application is submitted before the Application deadline as displayed on the information page of the department to which you are applying. Applications received after this date may not be reviewed for admission.

Apply early

Once you have been accepted into your program, you will need to sort out the necessary travel, study and immigration documents with the Canadian Government representative in your area (embassy or consulate).
